I am a consultant in the Kansas City area. I now have 2 business customers on Google Fiber and likely more on the way. Time Warner and Suddenlink are starting to offer up to 300Mbps service in the area.
There has been a lot of discussion on what kind of hardware in the UTM it takes to handle this kind of speed. My typical customer has 10 users. My biggest has 35 users.
There is a large disconnect between the hardware needed for these speeds and the software license costs. This is not just Untangle but Sophos and Sonicwall as well. The U50 can't handle it. In today's world 35 users is more than 50 devices anyway but that's another issue.
Best I can tell the device needed to handle these speeds will cost between $1500 and $1800. This is not a problem as I can talk my customers into that. The software subscription that goes with those devices is for 150 users or so and costs from $1600 or $2700 per year for Untangle. That is a showstopper. Sophos and Sonicwall are a bit less but the still too much for the small offices I work with.
I am forced to look at a Nighthawk x6 router with the wireless turned off or just use the built in firewall that the modems have. I don't get all the UTM goodness but with this pricing it's just not a valid option.
I have to replace the U50 at my biggest client because it can't keep up. I have lots of spare virtual machine capacity but at $2700 per year for UTComplete150 I can't use it. I like to have the same stuff at multiple clients as it makes support easier.
This is a cool problem to have and more cities are going to be having it. I would like to have better options than dropping to fast consumer level hardware or falling back to protection and control at the desktop level.
Any ideas?
Brian
